Pierre Bastien

I'd never heard of Pierre Bastien until less than a month ago, but I'm so glad I have now, thanks to Supersonic Festival!(22nd-24th Oct '10).

Both a sound and visual artist, from Paris, Bastien constructs his own devices to develop music. Seeing him live was something else! To begin with, I was a little sceptical, as he simply set off his equipment to make incoherent clicks and industrial sounds. Yet as Bastien slowly layered each beat, the magic appeared visually as well as musically. I found him extremely hypnotic and engulfing to watch, so innovative and unusual, he seemed to be furthering the avant genre.

While I still can't believe some of his ideas have not been used before, especially when he blew a miniature trumpet into a glass of water to obscure it's sound! I found Pierre so compelling, even I became inspired to make music. Using basic sounds in a completely different manner than before, Bastien seems to reinvent music technology without the use of computers.

I can't wait to see him live again. Although, I do find just listening to his music without any visual qualities less mesmerising.
