James Webb - Untitled States, 18th September - 14th September 2010 @ the mac

Entitled The Black Passage, Webb explores the emotions and fears of anyone who dares to enter the dark, depths of his refined work.

This sound installation is certainly not for the faint hearted, as curious viewers are thrown into an uncomfortable, deep mine re-enactment of Johannesburg. Upon entering and feeling the door close behind you, the pitch black room almost consumes you. A literal nothing can be seen but a light square at the far end of the tunnel, subliminally drawing, those brave enough, towards it.

While the uneasy sight senses seem blocked, the harsh, crackling, industrial recordings of an empty mine elevator disorientates the auditory and confuses brain perception. Leaving any who make it this far putting their arms out in front of them, in hope they can finally sense something. The blind tunnel seems longer that it actually is, almost endless. Yet once the square is reached, the intensity seems to falter as the light reminisces safety.

As uncomfortable and physical the piece can be, I find it so enticing and addictive, I never get bored of experiencing such an unusual, unique emotional impact. But I do suggest entering in twos first time around!
