I know she isn't exactly avant-garde but she's certainly done some amazing experimental work within her vast career.
I've always been a fan of Kate Bush, ever since I heard Wow on the Grand Theft Auto:Vice City soundtrack. This enticed me to purchase her best of album The Whole Story and Ariel in 2005, but then I just left it at that.
It wasn't really until last year that I became obsessed with her work, after picking up Hounds of Love for £1 from Rubber Soul, a record shop based in Stoke. The album became pure ecstasy to my ears, as I listened to her beautifully-crafted, high-pitched wailing voice and piano talent. Yet it wasn't her famous Running up the Hill that had entranced me, although I do adore that single, it was in fact Watching you Without me. An elegant, indian-influenced relaxation that stole my heart and took me to a better place. It just felt perfect, the dainty beat blending into Kate's mesmerising vocals "There's a ghost in our home, just watching you without me. I'm not here, you don't hear me". Spelling a mysterious ghoul-like presence into the music. While Waking the Witch delved into a hypnotic almost gothic/metal-like vocal full of unpredictable delights.
This new found fixation saw me rummaging through specialist record stores and charity shops, in a hunt for all her albums. Never for Ever became my next purchase, championing her highly rock star form on Violin as I began to throw myself into a frenzy. This side of Kate really allows you to let everything out!
Oxfam books and music shop in Moseley, Birmingham became the next stop to add another album to my collection. Here, I came across The Kick Inside and Lionheart, The Red Shoes and The Sensual World. Four awe-inspiring albums that allowed me to follow down Kate's amazing pathway of music.
But with The Dreaming still missing in my collection, I'm still just as eager to hear more perfection. While the pop Queen could easily make a fitting resurface, in a world that is seemingly populated by female musical talent.
